Expansion of Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam

The Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam has embarked on a major expansion programme to offer high-quality medical care and increase its capacity as a teaching institute within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). The scheme, with a preliminary budget of over $50 million, is the largest private health care project to be undertaken in Tanzania to date.

Located at the corner of Ocean Road and Ufukoni Road, the hospital was established in 1964 and in addition to providing healthcare it acts as a postgraduate teaching centre with 20 to 25 residencies in various branches of medicine.

The hospital is expanding in line with Dar es Salaam's growing demand for high-quality medical care, and has also been earmarked as a future training centre within AKDN’s system of medical, nursing and allied health education.

The plan involves the construction of a 10,000 sqm building that will connect to the current structure at Ocean Road, expanding many of the existing inpatient facilities and doubling the hospital's current capacity of 74 beds to 150 beds.

The principal healthcare areas catered for under the plan include a comprehensive cardiology programme; a cancer programme with chemotherapy treatment and advanced cancer surgeries; a new intensive care facility; and a new labour and delivery suite with private paediatric and maternity beds.

The hospital is under the auspices of the Aga Khan Health Services Tanzania (AKHST), part of a group of agencies collectively known as the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) involved in a range of activities including healthcare, education, architecture, microfinance, rural development and disaster management.
