West Legon neighbourhood (Westlands)
West Legon, otherwise known as Westlands, is a rapidly growing residential area about 14km north of the city centre and 4km west of the University of Ghana.
The local residents mostly rich Ghanaians and academics are commonly referred to as been-tos (people who have been to ie lived in Europe or the US). Foreigners, especially Lebanese, also live in this area. West Legon is well planned with good roads and plenty of trees. Housing, dating from the mid-1990s, is mostly in 3/4-bedroom detached houses. There are not many shops, although some residents, especially the caretakers of buildings under construction, run kiosks selling food and toiletries outside their homes.
There are a few schools and a handful of offices in this area. With the exception of Westlands Gardens, a small watering hole that can be hired by private individuals for special occasions, there is little in the way of leisure activities and no night life. Taxis and trotros run along the main roads in the area though most residents own cars. There is not much traffic.
