2008 Africa Cup of Nations: Egypt retains championship title.
Egypt has clinched the Africa Cup of Nations title for a record sixth time following its 1-0 victory over Cameroon on 10 February. The defending champions scored in the 77th minute after having the run of the first half as Cameroon failed to move beyond a mainly defensive approach. Host team Ghana came third after beating Ivory Coast 4-2 on 9 February.
The tournament drew to a close amid fresh criticism of the local organising committee for its handling of the competition in Ghana. The logistical organisation, hospitality for visiting teams, lack of infrastructure outside stadiums, the absence of a cultural programme to accompany the tournament and the quality of the pitches have all come under attack in the local and international media. Fans have also complained about the excessive cost of tickets for matches, which meant that often teams were playing in largely empty stadiums.
