The main state university in the capital, Addis Ababa University (AAU), is to offer German language to university level as a minor subject for the first time. The decision comes in response to what the Goethe-Institut Addis Abeba says is the growing popularity of the language among students. The curriculum has been drawn up by the institute together with AAUs institute of languages, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German embassy. Twelve students have already enrolled for the new course, which is due to begin this summer. Besides AAU, it is only possible to study German in Addis Ababa at the Goethe Institut and in the French and Norwegian schools.
