The metropolitan millennium council has launched a clean-up campaign in Addis Ababa in view of the anticipated influx of visitors to the city for the Ethiopian millennium celebrations in September. All city residents are expected to take part in the operation, which will be organised in conjunction with local government authorities and other community institutions. An award will be given to the sub-city (local administrative unit) that conducts the most successful clean-up exercise.

The campaign is just one of a number of more or less costly projects being implemented ahead of the millennium on 12 September, when according to the version of the Julian calendar in use in Ethiopia the country enters the year 2000. Many people have criticised the initiatives, saying the money could be better spent improving the living conditions of Ethiopia
