The head of the Addis Ababa caretaker administration Birhane Deressa has laid the cornerstone of the Addis Millennium Park in the Yeka sub-city northeast of the city centre. The proposed facility, which will occupy a 36 hectare plot on Fkir Mariam Aba Techam Street near Saint Michael Orthodox church, will contain a nations and nationalities museum and recreational and sports facilities for public use. Plans are still to be finalised and the necessary funding raised, but if all goes to plan construction should be finished by early June. The Yeka park is just one of a number of initiatives being planned to mark the year 2000, which in the Ethiopian calendar falls on 11 September this year.
