George Aladwa of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has been elected as the new mayor of Nairobi. He won 57 votes to 45 for James Gakuya of the Party of National Unity (PNU).
Aladwa has been acting mayor of the city since 2010 when the previous mayor had to step down over a corruption case involving the sale of cemetery land.
The ODM has 53 councillors in the city government and the PNU 45. This is the last time that the city mayor will be elected by the council. Under the terms of the new 2010 constitution mayors will in future be elected by popular vote.
