A last-minute amendment to an already controversial media bill requiring journalists to reveal undisclosed sources if a published story ends up in court are causing a storm in Kenya and beyond.

Media professionals and lawyers have criticised the clause as an attack on the free press, as it could prevent sources from revealing sensitive information in confidence. Some also see it as a way to intimidate journalists in the run-up to the general elections in December. The United States and German ambassadors to Kenya have described the amendment as
