Arusha quarry collapse

At least 14 people were killed in a quarry in the Moshono district of Arusha, some nine km from the city centre, on 1 April.

The accident happened after the sides of a quarry collapsed while workers were digging illegally for rocks and sand.

The quarry was shut down in 2006 after a similar incident claimed the lives of seven people.

The accident, which took place during heavy seasonal rains, comes four days after a partially-built 16-storey building collapsed killing 36 people in the central business district of Dar es Salaam.

The rescue efforts have been called off but an investigation is ongoing into the cause of the building collapse, and police have detained eight people for questioning.
