Cape Town has been named World Design Capital 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design on the final day of its congress in Taipei, on 26 October.

The first African city to win the title, Cape Town beat the two other finalists, Spain's Bilbao and the Irish capital, Dublin, out of an original 56 entrants. The title is awarded to cities based on their commitment to use design as an effective tool for social, cultural and economic development.
