There are plans to build two major flyovers at the Gotera interchange, otherwise known as Confusion Square due to its heavy and chaotic traffic, the English-language business weekly Fortune reports. The 95 million birr project, presented to the Addis Ababa city roads authority (AACRA) by a Chinese design company in June, involves the construction of overpasses connecting Dejazmach Beyene Merid Street in Kera to Ethio-Chinese Friendship Avenue in Wollo Sefer and Beyene Aba Sebsid Avenue to Debre Zeit Road. Construction is being funded by the Ethiopian and Chinese governments and work is expected to get underway in October. Construction may be awarded directly to the Chinese company CRBC Addis Engineering without a tender according to AACRA sources. CRBC is already handling 180 million birr worth of infrastructure projects in the Ethiopian capital. At present an average of 80,000 vehicles pass through the Gotera interchange south of the city centre every day, according to Fortune. During rush hour it can take up to 15 minutes to get across.
