Maputo is to get a new drainage system as part of a major infrastructure project financed by an Italian government loan. Work in the capital will include the installation of almost eight kilometres of primary drainage canals and over two kilometres of secondary pipes as well as the construction of over ten kilometres of new roads, to a total cost of 16.9 million.

The project also includes the construction of the 39.1 million Nhacangare dam in the Bru district in Manica province (central Mozambique). This will allow for better water management in the Pngu river basin serving Beira, Mozambiques second city.
