Telecommunication companies have been banned from displaying corporate advertisements around Accra.

In an effort to reclaim the city from the widespread custom of placing advertising posters and painting slogans on every available wall, the regional minister for the greater Accra area Nii Amarh Ashitey, said that as Accra is the gateway to Ghana the city's walls should reflect "local ceremonial colours" and not be covered in advertisements.

Companies can now only display advertising in the city when they organise events but they should be removed immediately after the event is over.

The move comes as the regional coordinating council intensifies its efforts to develop Accra by cleaning the streets and removing rubbish from around the capital city.
