At least eight people have been killed and thousands more displaced by cyclone Jokwe in the northern coastal province of Nampula, local news sources report. The tropical storm hit land on 8 March with heavy rainfall and winds of up to 200 kph, which have destroyed homes, damaged electricity pylons and uprooted trees.

The cyclone is now moving southwards through the country and emergency officials are expecting further destruction and deaths.

Jokwe comes in the wake of severe flooding in central parts of Mozambique earlier this year due to prolonged heavy seasonal rainfall in the Zambezi river basin.
