Dar es Salaam bans cash payments for parking fines
Penalties for parking offences to be paid by bank cards.
The Dar es Salaam city council has banned cash payments for parking offences in the city, following media reports of motorists being harassed for cash over dubious traffic violations.
Dar es Salaam mayor Isaya Mwita says the order is in response to concerns that motorists were being targeted by certain unscrupulous traffic inspectors.
All traffic officials in Dar es Salaam must now use the city council's POS banking machines, to allow for transparency and to increase revenue for city hall.
The mayor underlined that inspectors must be uniformed, carry identification, use official cars and never engage in "abusive and offensive language."
