Horst Kohler, the former president of Germany, is to attend a high level East African Community (EAC) roundtable discussion in Arusha on 16 June. The summit takes place at 14.00 in the Thembo Hall of the Mount Meru hotel, under the theme: Ambition for and reality of the East African Community in a globalised world.

Invited to the event are representatives from the world of politics, business, media, academia, civil society organisations and trade unions. Presiding over the discussions is the EAC secretary general Richard Sezibera who will highlight key priority areas for the EAC, while former Tanzanian minister of finance Edwin Mtei will analyse the challenges faced in implementing EAC protocols and agreements.

Mtei is a former governor of the Tanzanian Central Bank and he also served as a director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the 1980s.

Germany is one of the 12 development partners of the EAC partnership which funds EAC integration and development activities. Last December the German government doubled its contributions from the previous
