Ethiopias national flag carrier Ethiopian Airlines has been nominated African Airline of the Year 2006 by the African Aviation Journal as part of its annual Africa Aviation Awards. Reasons given for the award included sound financial performance, overall profitability, passenger growth, route network expansion, fleet modernization, in-flight services and customer care. Launched in 1945, the airline covers 47 destinations world-wide from its Addis Ababa hub, including 28 in Africa. At the end of the fiscal year 2005/2006 total operating revenue showed an increase of 21 per cent and passenger numbers of 14 per cent over the previous 12 months.

The African Aviation awards were launched in 1999. Last year the airline of the year award went to Kenya Airways.
