Qatar Airways plans to launch scheduled flights between Maputo and Qatar capital Doha, from 31 October.
The service will operate three times a week, via Johannesburg, and will become the airline's 20th African destination. The Doha-based carrier recently launched daily flights from Doha to Rwandan capital Kigali, and on 25 July it is introducing a daily Doha service from Kilimanjaro International airport in Arusha, Tanzania, followed by the launch of daily flights from Mombasa in Kenya, from 15 August.
Meanwhile construction work on the domestic terminal at Maputo international Airport is said to be in its final stages and is due for completion by October. The new terminal will be able to handle 300 departing passengers and 250 arriving passengers per hour during peak times.
The works are being carried out by China’s Anhui Foreign Economics Construction Corporation (AFECC) at an estimated cost of $32 million.
