All schools in the Western Cape could soon have free broadband internet access thanks to a generous offer from a prominent businessman. The ministry for education declined to reveal the identity of the sponsor but confirmed the offer involved granting the Western Cape education department access to a new under-sea communication cable currently nearing completion.

Education minister Donald Grant is expected to outline further details of the offer soon as part of his update on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at schools across the Western Cape province.

The provincial Education Department stated that the majority of its schools (1,392) have already been equipped with computer labs through the department
