The interior ministry has said it is setting up a freephone number connected to police stations to encourage victims of domestic violence to report the crime. Initially the service will connect users to selected police stations across the country before being extended to all stations by the end of the year.

The government has also announced plans to create an office to attend to reports of domestic violence in all provincial capitals by 2009. The Beira office in the central Sofala province is due to open shortly.

The announcements came during a meeting in Maputo organised by the interior ministry in conjunction with the United Nations
