Workers across the country downed their tools on 20 June for the first day of an indefinite general strike in protest over unpopular measures introduced by outgoing president Olusegun Obasanjo the day before stepping down. On 28 May Obasanjo increased the price of petrol by N10 to N75 per litre, allegedly to offset the cost to the government of subsidising imported petroleum products.
