Kenyan elections: deaths increase across country.
Up to 100 people are believed to have died across Kenya in violence sparked by the disputed presidential elections of 27 December. Over 40 people are reported to have been shot dead in the western town of Kisumu, a stronghold of opposition party Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Raila Odinga, after police opened fire on crowds protesting against his defeat by incumbent president Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity (PNU).
Early results had given the ODM candidate and former Kibaki ally a clear lead, although this evaporated during counting amid signs that PNU was trying to interfere with the result. Following long delays, on 30 December Kibaki was declared the winner with 4,584,721 votes to Raila
