At least 45 people died near Agbabo village on the outskirts of Lagos on Christmas day when the petrol they were trying to gather from an illegally punctured pipeline caught fire. The explosion scorched an area the size of a football pitch, killing mostly women and children who had arrived with fuel containers to take advantage of the free fuel. Their remains have been buried in mass graves at the site.
