The Lagos state government is to begin the first phase of its Landfill Gas Recovery and Utilisation project in the coming months, as part of its plans to turn domestic waste into a steady electricity supply to residents of the state.
The project will be monitored by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to avoid the release of greenhouse gas emissions and to ensure compliance with international standards on environmental governance.
LAWMA is to build 20 transfers loading centres across Lagos. Each site will be designed to extract methane gas from solid waste and turn it into gas used to generate energy, which in turn would be distributed to communities across the state.
The first phase of the project is due to be completed within the next 18 months.
