Renovation of Badary Museum ahead of Lagos state's 50th anniversary.
The Lagos state government has unveiled plans to updgrade the Badagry Heritage Museum in an effort to boost tourism.
The museum at Badagry, a coastal town west of Lagos city, contains artefacts and records documenting the culture of the people of Badagry whose harbour played a central role in the export of slaves to the Americas up to the 1840s. The objects on display date back to before, during and after the slave trade era.
The minister for tourism, arts and culture Folorunso Folarin-Coker said that much of the museum building requires a “complete restoration and rehabilitation” and that its eight gallery spaces would be totally remodelled and modernised.
The museum upgrade comes ahead of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Lagos state next year.
