Addis Ababa city council has announced plans to demolish part of the city centre and build low-cost condominium housing in its place.

The English-language business weekly Capital Ethiopia reports that the areas earmarked for demolition include parts of Arada sub-city, around the very central Piazza commercial area and Arat Kilo, home to some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the city, and the stretch of Haile Gebre Selassie Avenue leading east off Meskel Square towards Caramara Bridge.

The plans are part of efforts by the city council to eliminate Addis Ababa
