Work to overhaul the road network in the cidade cimento (city centre) will end in December, the person in charge of city infrastructure has said. The works, which began almost a year ago, have involved more than 20 roads covering a total of 35 km. They have been financed by OPEC fund of the Arab Bank for Economic Development of Africa (BADEA) and the Mozambican government to a total of US$22.3 million. The project has involved creating a rainwater drainage system, installing drainage channels at all crossroads and areas where water accumulates and introducing pavements.
