The price of milk and bread is going up in Nairobi supermarkets thanks to a shortage of milk and increases in wheat prices. Prices are increasing by up to 10 per cent for both products. Milk now costs more than at any other time in the last three years.

One of the reasons for the price hike is the larger sums paid to farmers but this in turn has been determined by the higher cost of fuel for machinery and transport. These increases come on top of similar ones last September.

The overall rate of inflation in Kenya was 18.9 per cent in December 2011 according to figures from Kenya
