More Ghanaians learning German

An increasing amount of Ghanaians are learning the German language and embracing the country’s culture, according to Hanna Schlingman, head of the language department at the Goeth-Institut in Accra.

She said that patronage of the institute’s national annual German Cultural Festival has grown from 250 at the inaugural event five years ago to 600 participants at the recent edition.

The festival unites German students and teachers from all education levels with stage performances in German, and promotes networking among Ghanaian students and German language clubs and departments.

Schlingman said this year’s event saw the participation of 14 schools from Accra, Kumasi and Ho, as well as central Ghana’s University of Winneba which has plans to establish a German department.
