To the background of continuing clashes in Cairo's central Tahrir Square between the supporters of President Murbarak and his opponents the presidential machine launched a combined public relations campaign on 3 February.

The president announced to American television audiences how he would like to resign but feared that if he did he would leave chaos behind orchestrated, he said, by the Muslim Brotherhood which, he claimed, was behind the violence in Tahrir Square the previous day.
