Dar es Salaam is to get its first compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling stations at Ubungo and at the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) compound in Mikocheni early next year as part of a project to use locally sourced natural gas for commercial and domestic purposes and in transport. Other parts of the project include building a gas compressor station, converting private and public vehicles to CNG and laying up to 45 km of gas pipeline to supply homes and institutions. The gas will come from the Songo Songo field on Songo Songo island 200 km south of the commercial capital.
The project is an initiative of TPDC in conjunction with PanAfrican Energy Tanzania Ltd as part of a strategy to reduce the country
