Police in Nairobi have fired teargas at a crowd protesting at the proposed size of the new unity government as political leaders continue to disagree over the number and distribution of ministerial posts.

Demonstrators gathered in the central Uhuru Park on 1 April to call for a cabinet of no more than 24 ministers in recognition of the present economic difficulties in Kenya caused partly by recent post-election unrest. They then tried to deliver a petition to the office of the president at the nearby Harambee House but riot police intervened.
