Lagos state government has approved the creation of two specialist centres at Gbagada General Hospital treating cardiac and kidney patients and burns and trauma victims respectively. The cardiac and kidney centre will be located in a new two-storey building and have facilities for transplant and dialysis to allow kidney patients to receive treatment in Nigeria, rather than having to travel abroad. The burns and trauma centre will occupy a three-floor block, which will house operating theatres, an X-ray room, laboratory rooms, paramedical facilities and facilities for ambulance drivers.

Construction work is expected to take a year. The state has already allocated the necessary funding in its 2008 budget.
