The Debre Selam Medhanialem (Savior of the World) church in Kechene in northern Addis Ababa has announced plans to build a hospital near its compound in an attempt to meet the health care needs of the local community. A church official told The Daily Monitor that a board has been established to oversee fundraising for the project, which is expected to cost 25 million birr including equipment. The local community, government, local and international non-governmental organisations are all expected to chip in. Kechene is home to a poor community of potters and weavers in which HIV/AIDS, reproductive health problems, eye disease and other poverty-related health problems are rife. No indication has been given of when the new facility will be built.
