Hotels in South Africa will have to reapply for a new star rating under a stricter grading system being introduced by the ministry for tourism and the Tourism Grading Council South Africa (TGSA). Designed to set higher standards and eliminate overly-generous ratings awarded to sub-standard establishments in the past, the new grading process will see hotels reviewed each year.

Hotels assessed under the new system will be issued with serial-coded plaques, linked to the hotel's membership number, and during April the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (Fedhasa) is launching a nationwide campaign to inform the public of what level of service to expect from each grade.
