New number plates for Cape Town

Western Cape vehicle registrations to change from CA to CAA in 2018.

All new vehicles in Cape Town in 2018 are to be issued with registration plates showing CAA instead of the current CA, according to proposals by the Western Cape department of transport.

The change will apply to new vehicle registrations and will not affect current vehicle owners or motorists who wish to transfer their vehicle licence to a different vehicle.

The transport department is introducing the changes because it is beginning to run out of possible alphanumeric combinations.

Each South African province has its own numbering scheme and licence plate design.
