Dar es Salaam is to get two new satellite cities as part of efforts to relieve traffic and housing pressure on the commercial capital.

The local newspaper The Guardian reports that new urban areas are to be built in Kigamboni and Luguruni areas respectively to the south and west of central Dar es Salaam. Construction is due to start once the necessary road infrastructure has been completed and the master plans presented to the government, possibly in June this year. No timeframe has been given for the completion of the developments, which represent a novelty in Tanzania.

The satellite cities will have a mix of residential and commercial property including high-rise buildings, shopping malls, hotels and banking facilities. According to the minister for lands, housing and human settlements development, John Chiligati, they should
