A new conference centre is in the final stage of completion at the Ngurdoto Montain Lodge complex close to the Arusha national park. With a seating capacity of 4,000 it will be the largest in Tanzania. Its main rival is the 1,300-capacity Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) in the heart of the city, which is used both by the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as the temporary seat of the East African Community. However the AICC does have plans for a new facility for 7,000 people to be built in the Olorien area at Njiro in southeast Arusha.
The Ngurdoto centre, operated by the Impala Group, is due for completion in May 2010. It will have a restaurant, business facilities, a recreation centre and show rooms, as well as accommodation at the nearby Ngurdoto Montain Lodge with its 400 rooms and 16 presidential suites.
