The new bridge spanning the mighty Zambezi river and linking the central coastal Sofala and Zambezia provinces is due to be officially opened on 10 July according to the June newsletter of the development cooperation office of the Italian embassy in Maputo. Italy is one of the major donors in the project.

Plans for the bridge, which measures 4.9 km in length and joins Caia on the south bank of the river to Chimuara on the north bank, pre-date independence from Portugal in 1975. However construction only got underway in 2006 after proper feasibility and environmental impact assessments had been carried out.
