Incumbent president Armando Guebuza is the candidate for the ruling FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front) party in the December 2009 presidential elections. The decision came after the head of state ran unopposed in internal party nominations. Guebuza, a wealthy businessman, will be running for a second term in office after succeeding Joaquim Chissano as president in 2004.

Born in the town of Murrupula in the northern province of Nampula in 1943, Guebuza was closely involved in the struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule. He was appointed minister of internal administration in the transition government that lead the country to independence in 1975 and has served in the country
