Maputo has launched a recycling programme to clean up the capital's Costa do Sol and Miramar beaches.
The rubbish will be collected and recycled by the Mozambican Recycling Association (AMOR) under an agreement with the city council, while the project is sponsored by the nation's largest mobile telephone company M-Cel, and brewing company Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM).
Commentators have suggested that the CDM sponsorship of the project is fitting due to the prevalence of beer bottles found on the beaches.
To date CDM has only reused its large 55 ml beer bottles but has now pledged to recycle smaller bottles also.
Maputo's mayor David Simango said the recycling project reflected the city’s commitment to becoming more environmentally-friendly.
