On 29 October Kenyan and international athletes will take to the streets of the capital for the fourth annual marathon, sponsored by Standard Chartered Nairobi. The 42-kilometre race begins and ends at the Nyayo national stadium just south of the city centre and the course is concentrated around Mombasa Road and the eastern part of the city. It is the first leg of the Greatest Race on Earth relay competition, which will see three other marathons, in Singapore, Mumbai and Hong Kong on 3 December, 27 January and 4 March respectively. Taking place at an altitude of 1,600 m above sea level, the Nairobi leg is particularly challenging. Last year the race was won by 23-year-old Samson Barmao from Kenya, with a time of 02:12:14.
