Tanzanite information centre to open in Mererani.
A centre providing information on the rare local Tanzanite gemstone is under construction in Mererani southeast of Arusha, the only place in the world where the stone is mined.
The centre will be run by TanzaniteOne, one of the leading mining companies operating in the area. Its opening, scheduled for September, comes a year after the same company opened a museum dedicated to the gemstone in Arusha.
Tanzanite was discovered by chance by a Maasai tribesman in the 1960s. Since then it has enjoyed huge success on the international market, being described by specialists as
