At least one person has been confirmed dead and goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed in a fire that wrecked the popular Tejuoso market in Yaba, Lagos, on 18 December. The blaze broke out at around 19.00 local time in the area of the 30-year-old market known as Canteen, before quickly spreading to other sections. It took firefighters until 02.00 the following morning to put out the fire amid reports of looting. The remains of the market will now be pulled down and there are already plans to build a new one in its place. Meanwhile state governor Babatunde Fashola has said that displaced storeholders will be relocated although it is not clear where they are to go. This was the fourth fire at the market in four years.
