With the theme of "Water and Urbanisation" the South African government hosts a three day event in honour of the 2011 World Water Day in Cape Town, from 20 - 22 March. The global event, co-organised by UN Habitat and UN Water, is backed locally by the city of Cape Town and the West Cape provincial government.

This international initiative highlights the issues of sustainability and conservation of water in Africa, providing a platform to discuss a range of options for tackling the urban water and sanitation challenges currently facing the continent,

The principal event takes place on World Water Day itself (22 March) at Cape Town international conference centre. However over the three days many organisations in the city are holding parallel events, with most of the action taking place at the conference centre
