Mayor of Cape Town Helen Zille is to become premier of the Western Cape provincial government after her party, Democratic Alliance (DA), took the province from the national ruling ANC in the 22 April elections. She will stand down as Cape Town mayor on 29 April in readiness for her new post. Deputy city mayor Grant Haskin will take over her mayoral duties until the city council elects a new mayor. So far there has been no indication of when this might take place.

DA, which is the official opposition party at national level, won the provincial election in the Western Cape by 51.46 per cent to ANC
