Accra's first international millennium marathon hopes to attract 15,000 participants and 100,000 spectators. It is being organised to promote both the importance of health and fitness and the image of Ghana abroad.
The main races take place in Accra but there are also runs and supporting events around the country. The 21 km (half marathon only) course in Accra will pass many of the city's most famous sites, including the Labadi beach road, the national theatre and the Kwame Nekruma mausoleum. It is one of the flattest in Africa and is being promoted as a good training ground for other full international runs.
In conjunction with the millennium marathon – which has an impressive list of international sponsors such as Airtel, Canon, Garmin, Ethiopian Airlines, FedEx, Peugeot, Tullow, Huawei – there is also a sports and fitness trade fair at the Aviation Social Centre.
Accra's first millennium marathon comes just two months before the more challenging annual 50 km Runathon on 28 November in Accra.
