9 June-27 Aug 2006. The annual hip hop indaba meaning discussion or meeting after the Zulu term in-daba provides an opportunity for breakdancers, writers, rappers, DJs, skateboarders, BMX riders, capoeira martial artists, roller bladers and graffiti artists from all over South Africa to compete, and for parents and teachers to find out more about contemporary youth culture. Following a national tour 9 June-15 July 2006, participants end up in Cape Town for the national finals 25-26 Aug and the presentation of the first African hip hop awards on 27 Aug. Organised by the Cape Town hip hop community, the event in the Mother City will be preceded by a conference for young people on Robben Island in Table Bay 19-24 Aug, including workshops on poverty alleviation and documentaries from Africa and other underground hip hop scenes.
