22 September 2010. The Alliance Francaise presents a concert by one of west Africa's most famous musicians, Aly Keita.
Born in the Ivory Coast in 1969, Keita hails from a musical family and started his career playing the xylophone and marimba. Now based in Mali, he plays the balafon - a type of wooden xylophone or percussion idiophone which plays melodic tunes, has up to 27 keys and is thought to have originated in Mali in the 1300s.
Keita achieves a unique sound by adding different calabash resonators to the balafon. The concert begins with a support act: percussion and singing group Ten Family.
