Anthony Okello at One Off Gallery

This is Okello's second solo exhibition at the One Off Contemporary Art Gallery.

The Kenyan artist, a sort of African Chagall, has worked at the Kuona Trust, has had his work on sale in a charity auction at Bonhams in 2013 and was one of 11 East African artists in the Pop-Up Africa exhibition at the Gallery of African Art in London in 2014, organised in collaboration with Nairobi's One off Gallery.

Many of Okello's works, often based on East African myths, have a dream-like quality, reminiscent of Chagall, as in the series Orders from Above and in Her Magic.

Then there are his “portraits”, some of which are in this exhibition, and in a new development here more of his mythological allegories are applied to the assemblages of clothing labels by his brother Peter Walala.

Okello has been defined by one African reviewer as being in a class of his own.
